“Digital exclusion rarely announces itself as a problem. It settles quietly into everyday decisions, where speed, habit, and assumptions shape experiences long before anyone thinks to question who is missing.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“When accessibility is never named, it cannot be led. Silence does not mean inclusion exists; it means leadership has not yet developed the awareness needed to recognize responsibility.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Most organizations do not exclude people on purpose. Exclusion happens when leaders move forward without seeing how ordinary digital decisions shape unequal access for different users.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital barriers often persist because they still allow work to continue. Systems can function while people quietly struggle, adapt, or disengage without leadership ever noticing the cost.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“When no one complains, leaders assume everything is working. In reality, many people stop speaking up long before barriers disappear, especially when they believe nothing will change.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital accessibility failures are rarely technical surprises. They are predictable outcomes of decisions made without inclusive criteria, long before code is written or tools are selected.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Workarounds are often mistaken for resilience. Over time, they normalize exclusion by shifting responsibility onto individuals instead of addressing the systems that created the barriers.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital tools are often judged by efficiency and speed, not by who can actually use them. What feels productive to leadership can quietly exclude others every single day.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Treating accessibility as a technical issue removes leadership from accountability. When responsibility is delegated downward, the conditions that create exclusion remain unchanged.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Inaccessible digital experiences do not usually break systems. They break trust, confidence, and participation, often without ever appearing on a dashboard or escalation report.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Intent does not protect against harm. Well-meaning decisions can still produce exclusion when leaders lack visibility into how diverse people experience digital environments.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“The absence of visible failure often delays responsibility. Leaders act once risk becomes undeniable, not when early signals first appear.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital exclusion thrives in familiarity. Practices that feel normal, efficient, and proven are rarely questioned, even when they consistently leave some people behind.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital accessibility is often invisible to those with power because they are least likely to encounter the barriers created by the systems they oversee.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“When accessibility is unnamed, it becomes nobody’s job. Responsibility diffuses quietly until barriers feel inevitable rather than intentional.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Organizations often learn about accessibility through crisis instead of curiosity. Awareness arrives late, shaped by incidents rather than leadership foresight.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Silence from employees does not signal satisfaction. It often reflects fatigue, adaptation, or the belief that raising issues will not lead to meaningful change.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital exclusion is reinforced when leaders prioritize delivery without asking who is impacted. What leaders do not ask about rarely becomes part of the work.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Barriers persist when leadership assumes accessibility would surface naturally if it mattered. Many impacts remain hidden precisely because speaking up feels risky.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Inaccessible tools still produce outputs, reports, and results. Their failure is human, not operational, and therefore easy to overlook.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital accessibility problems do not begin in code. They begin in decisions about timelines, priorities, budgets, and what leaders choose to measure.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“When accessibility is absent from language, it is absent from strategy. Leaders cannot lead what they do not yet have words for.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital exclusion becomes normalized when it repeats without consequence. Over time, what once felt wrong simply feels expected.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Systems reflect the awareness of the leaders who shape them. What leaders do not yet see becomes embedded in how work gets done.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital accessibility is often misunderstood as a niche concern. In reality, it reflects how well leadership anticipates diversity in real human experience.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Leaders rarely witness digital barriers directly. This distance makes exclusion easier to ignore and harder to manage without intentional effort.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“The most costly accessibility risks grow quietly. By the time they demand attention, they are already embedded across tools, processes, and culture.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Organizations are not inaccessible because they lack values. They are inaccessible because awareness has not yet reshaped decision-making.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital exclusion persists when leaders confuse technical functionality with human usability. A system working does not mean it works for everyone.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“The first step toward accessibility is not action or strategy. It is noticing where exclusion has been allowed to exist without being seen.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Accessibility becomes visible only when something goes wrong. At this stage, action is driven by urgency, not intention, and progress depends on pressure rather than shared understanding.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Reacting to accessibility issues feels responsible, but reaction alone does not change systems. It resolves incidents without addressing the conditions that caused them.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“When accessibility is addressed only after complaints, leadership remains in a cycle of response instead of direction. Problems are fixed, but patterns are left untouched.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Legal or reputational risk can force action, but fear rarely builds capability. Once the pressure fades, accessibility often slips back into the background.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“One-off accessibility fixes create the illusion of progress. Without shared expectations, each solution stands alone, disconnected from future work.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Digital accessibility improvements that rely on individual effort are fragile. Progress lives with people, not systems, and disappears when attention shifts.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Treating accessibility as an exception reinforces inconsistency. What is handled case by case never becomes reliable or predictable for users.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Leaders often mistake responsiveness for leadership. Acting quickly is valuable, but without structure, speed replaces strategy.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Fixing what is visible does not address what remains hidden. Reactive accessibility leaves many barriers untouched simply because they have not yet surfaced.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“When accessibility work begins after publication, cost and frustration increase. Late fixes signal that inclusion was never part of the original plan.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Fragmented accommodations create uneven experiences. Some people benefit while others continue to struggle, depending on who happened to notice the issue.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Accessibility knowledge that stays within isolated teams cannot scale. Awareness without sharing limits impact and repeats the same learning across the organization.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Champions drive early progress, but reliance on heroes is not sustainable. When accessibility depends on passion alone, burnout becomes inevitable.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Verbal leadership support without direction creates confusion. Teams hear encouragement, but they do not know what is expected of them.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Encouragement feels safe, but it does not create consistency. Without clear signals, teams prioritize accessibility only when time allows.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Accessibility framed as “important but secondary” always loses to urgent delivery pressures. What is not prioritized explicitly becomes optional in practice.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Case-by-case accommodations feel fair, yet they often produce inequity. Outcomes vary based on awareness, persistence, or proximity to decision-makers.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Repeated reporting without lasting change erodes trust. Over time, people stop raising issues when response does not lead to improvement.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“When accessibility problems are treated as individual needs, systemic responsibility disappears. The organization adapts people instead of fixing systems.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Reactive accessibility keeps leaders busy but not informed. Energy is spent solving today’s issue without learning from yesterday’s pattern.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Handling issues as they arise feels pragmatic, but it prevents anticipation. Leadership remains focused on symptoms instead of causes.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Accessibility progress at this stage is real, but unstable. Gains exist, yet they can be undone just as quickly as they appeared.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Teams often reinvent the same fixes because lessons are not captured or shared. Learning stays local instead of becoming organizational knowledge.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Accessibility work driven by urgency creates fatigue. Constant reaction conditions teams to see inclusion as disruption rather than design.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Leaders may believe accessibility is under control because issues are being handled. In reality, control requires foresight, not responsiveness.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Fragmented accessibility sends mixed signals. Teams cannot tell whether inclusion is a priority or simply a nice-to-have.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“When accessibility depends on escalation, many barriers remain unresolved. Not all harm is loud enough to trigger action.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Progress at this stage is driven by events, not intention. What changes today depends on what breaks, not on what leaders choose.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Accessibility becomes associated with problems instead of quality. Over time, this framing makes inclusion feel like an obstacle rather than a value.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

“Without shared expectations, accessibility work remains reactive. Leadership effort is visible, but direction is still missing.”

~ Denis Boudreau, InklusivComm

Did you know?

Many accessibility issues can be identified through basic testing, yet most teams never test for them at all. What gets tested gets improved. What is never tested quietly degrades. Without intentional testing, accessibility problems remain invisible, accumulate over time, and surface only when they become urgent or costly.

In their own words

I had the chance to work with Denis Boudreau during a digital accessibility consulting project he led for Desjardins. What a privilege to benefit from his vast knowledge on the subject and his relevant advice! Denis quickly understood our needs and responded brilliantly. I could feel the extent of his expertise in digital accessibility, as well as his great humility and kindness towards the context in which we sought his help. I hope to have the pleasure of collaborating with Denis again and I recommend him to anyone looking to incorporate digital accessibility considerations, whether strategic or tactical, into their organization.

I am so grateful to have participated in your workshop with my colleagues! Thank you for sharing your personal and professional experiences in those sessions. I learned a lot from you, and what you shared has helped our Learning Academy move forward with ideas about how to integrate accessibility in everything we do. It also informs our ongoing conversation about “nothing without us” best principles and practices. Many thanks!

What I particularly enjoyed from this presentation and the training was learning new skills that are very relevant to my work as a Product Owner! Every business unit should be trained in this area as well, so their content can also be adapted to the needs of our clients who have disabilities.

We’ve called on Denis’ expertise on several occasions to bring our websites into compliance with timelines of the Ontarian digital accessibility laws. Denis's contributions have been invaluable to us in a number of ways, particularly during our redesign projects and the transition of Ontarian branches of State Farm under the Desjardins banner. Denis provided our teams with the necessary support to build internal expertise in inclusive design and accessible code, which, in turn, allowed us to maximize our integration of accessibility considerations and ultimately meet Ontarian government requirements.

Denis Boudreau came highly recommended for his in-depth accessibility knowledge, as well as his notoriety on the subject matter. As part of projects to set up new digital properties for the Cirque du Soleil, we have done business with Denis to ensure that our new digital channels provided an optimal experience for everyone while meeting accessibility standards and best practices. Denis’ contributions allowed us to meet our user experience goals while making our targeted digital properties accessible.

In the wake of our efforts towards the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), we called on Denis Boudreau to organize a series of training sessions with the entire TFO staff. Denis' rigor and expertise, demonstrated by his past activities and supported by testimonials from his peers in the industry, his ability to popularize the “science” of accessibility, and his passion for the inclusion and non-discrimination of people with disabilities made him the ideal person to help us understand and assimilate the criteria of the Law, as well as the subtleties of these criteria. Thanks to his collaboration, we successfully established a sustainable accessibility mindset at TFO Media Group.

This training was extremely relevant to me as a front-end developer. Denis really knows his topic and subject matter inside out! I learned a lot and loved pretty much everything about it. It definitely impacted the way I will be approaching my work in the future and the way I test my code.

Denis is one of the best web accessibility experts in North America, in addition to having solid UX skills. This expertise was most precious in past projects, where Bell had to make a major shift to integrate accessibility into its processes. Throughout the projects, I had the most wonderful experience working with Denis. His positive approach and his creativity enabled us to find incomparable solutions to the many challenges that stood in our way. During a project, Denis encourages everyone to think about design and welcomes each thought with an open mind. His contribution to the transformation of Bell.ca was exemplary.

A great conference that encourages us to reflect on the diversity of means at our disposal to improve the services we offer to our customers and make their lives easier. By better understanding everyone's reality, we can better adapt our methods to make our services more accessible. Despite the social media angle, we can draw conclusions that translate well to other areas of our business and make the services more accessible.
