InklusivComm’s Info-Hub year in review (and book updates)
Welcome back from the 2022 Holidays! I hope you had plenty of opportunities to rest up, recharge your batteries, share memorable times with loved ones, and even maybe commit to a few new year resolutions that may or may not still be applicable in a few weeks.
As usual, my new year resolutions will include going to sleep earlier, take better care of my body, eating healthier, and of course, moving more. That being said, considering that I’m currently sitting while writing this post, and that I just had a delicious chocolate croissant for breakfast, one might say I’m off to a pretty terrible start! But hey, I’m not one to judge. I’m sure there’s a place in the Multiverse where chocolate croissants are healthier than kale.
InklusivComm’s Info-Hub year in review
But speaking of new year resolutions, there is one that I did take last year that I did honour all the way through 2022, and that I intend to keep honouring again in 2023. Exactly one year ago, I started this entire Info-Hub blog section, with the intent of sharing my perspectives on inclusive communication an inclusive speaking with all of you, in order to help you become more inclusive speaking and communication professionals. One year into this commitment, I am quite amazed by all the new dots I got to connect along the way, but also by all of the writing that was poured into this section of my website.
In 2022, on top of finishing the writing of my first book that will be coming out next month (yay, me), I published a total of 256 posts (interesting number), broken down in 7 different categories:
- 33 dedicated tips – Did You Know capsules
- 33 dedicated tips – Food For Thought capsules
- 33 dedicated tips – Inclusive Speaking Questions capsules
- 33 dedicated tips – Inclusive Speaking Tips capsules
- 33 dedicated tips – Inclusive Web Tips capsules
- 52 InklusivComm Articles (one a week, for a total of 55,802 words!)
- 39 InklusivComm Interviews (one a week starting in April)
This repository of ideas, tips, tricks, and techniques will keep growing in 2023, with the addition of a new dedicated tips category that will be added as of this weekend, and focused on Document Accessibility, where we’ll explore best practices, tips and tricks to make your documents (PDFs, PowerPoints and other formats) more accessible and inclusive for audience members who have disabilities. This new category will also be updated once a week, and will be published on Saturday mornings.
I’m fairly certain that the InklusivComm’s Info-Hub section has already grown into the biggest resource of its kind, dedicated to inclusive communication. That idea alone is exciting, and is enough to fuel me to want to keep feeding it for a very long time. If you’ve been following these posts in 2022, I hope you have been getting a lot of value from them.
Feel free to reach out and let me know how they might have influenced your own approach to communication. It would be great to hear from you! You can also consider joining my daily or weekly newsletter that sends all of this awesomeness straight to your inbox, If you want to take your commitment to inclusion to the next level.
The Inclusive Speaker – book updates
A lot has also been going on since my last book update back in November. The fully edited, revised, and approved version of my manuscript was sent back to the editor on December 22nd, and is now considered “final”, meaning that I will not be making any more changes to it. It’s a huge milestone, as anyone who’s ever written a book will tell you. You spend all this time wordsmithing and massaging ideas, to finally grow the courage to let it go and accept that it will live on its own “as is”… that idea is quite intimidating.
I’m super proud of the results, and can’t wait for it to be available for everyone who cares about making the speaking world a more inclusive space. I’m even more proud to say that my editor said she thought it would probably be the best book they publish in 2023! I like to think that she was not just being nice, but that she actually meant it!
So, the next steps when it comes to the book between now and end of February are as follows:
- Finalizing the design of the front and back covers (95% done at this point)
- Reach out to “a special someone” to write the Foreword section
- Reaching out to different people who will want to read it first in exchange for a testimonial
- Working on the interior typesetting and design, based on a style guide I’ve put together
- Final approval of the general look and feel of the book
- Uploading the files to Amazon to get a paperback proof
- Final approval of the paperback proof once everything looks just right
- Official launch, sometime in late February
There are still quite a few steps to go, but the hardest ones are definitely behind me now. It should be smooth sailing from here, but it’s also exciting to work on all the materials online that will be supporting the book, like different tools and calculators to measure how much speaking professionals are leaving on the table by not being inclusive, self-assessment tools to measure just how inclusive they are, and other assets intended to flesh out the personas that are introduced throughout the book.
If you are interested about this project and would like to be part of the people who will get to read it first in exchange for a testimonial, please email me at [email protected].
